On 25 October 2018, the Yale-NUS College Library welcomed Dr. Muthukumaran to present the first “Speaking of” series talk of this semester. The “Speaking of” series features faculty members’ research and interests presented in an accessible and exciting way. Dr. Muthukumaran shared his passion for collecting manuscripts, rare books, and prints. He is a life-long bibliophile and began collecting these in earnest as an undergraduate at University College London. As part of his talk, he also discussed his collection, selections of which are on display here for the first time at Yale-NUS College Library. He examined the invention of writing, the formation of libraries, and their impact on textual transmission as well as conservation issues peculiar to manuscripts in Asia.
Take a look at the selections from his collection in our artefact cabinet (by the 24/7 study space) and the slides that he has generously shared from his talk: On Palm Leaf. The exhibition will be leaving the Library in early December.
